preheat oven to 425
sift flour,salt and baking soda in large bowl.
Add butter and rub into flour with fingertips.
mix egg and buttermilk together in separate jug
make a well in bowl and add liquid, use open hand to lightly mix. No need to knead. Turn out on floured surface and shape into loaf. About 1 1/2 inch tall. Cut a cross in top and poke a hole in four corners.
Glaze top of bread with left over buttermilk and put the tablespoon of oatmeal on top. Place in oven and bake for 10 425 then turn heat down to 400 degrees and bake for 40 more minutes.
